The 2024 revival of Starlight Express at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre has brought a fresh take on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic roller-skating musical. As part of this new vision, several original songs have been removed, making way for more modern and relevant tracks. Here are five songs that didn’t make it into the new production, alongside the new music that’s helping to tell the story in 2024.
1. Call Me Rusty
“Call Me Rusty” was once a key moment in Starlight Express, where Rusty, the show’s underdog hero, introduced himself and his dreams of proving his worth. However, this track has been cut to streamline the story and allow for newer songs, such as “I Am Me”, where characters assert their individuality and self-confidence, reflecting the updated themes of self-discovery and empowerment.
2. A Lotta Locomotion
This catchy tune, sung by the female coaches, celebrated the elegance and power of locomotives. Although it had its charm, it has been replaced by songs with more contemporary messages. In particular, “Hydrogen”, performed by the new character Hydra, explores modern energy sources and challenges traditional concepts of power and energy in the train race, making it more relevant to today’s audiences.
3. There’s Me
Originally sung by the character C.B., “There’s Me” provided a reflective moment in the show, but this song was removed in previous revisions and did not make it back in the 2024 revival. Instead, songs like “Momma’s Blues”, performed by the character Momma, take the emotional spotlight. This new, soulful track adds depth to the character, offering wisdom and guidance to the younger trains, creating a standout moment in the show.
4. Next Time You Fall in Love
This romantic duet between Rusty and Pearl was once a heartwarming moment, but it has been removed to shift the focus towards each character’s personal growth. The new production leans more on songs like “I Am Me” and “Hydrogen”, which emphasize individual strength and modern challenges rather than traditional love stories.
5. The Megamix
“The Megamix,” a medley of key musical moments from the original, used to close the show on a high note. This finale has been replaced with a new structure that better fits the modern tone of the 2024 production. Though the high-energy nature of Starlight Express remains, the focus has shifted towards giving each song more impact individually, such as the powerful “The Rap” which kicks off Act Two with a fresh, hip-hop vibe, further modernizing the show for today’s audience.
The 2024 version of Starlight Express is both nostalgic and forward-thinking, with new music and characters that reflect current issues, all while maintaining the high-octane energy that made the show a hit in the first place.
