As the curtain rises on 2024, The Royal Ballet revives Kenneth MacMillan’s Manon, marking half a century since its 1974 debut. This year also commemorates 100 years since the passing of Nicholas Georgiadis, the production’s renowned designer.

- A Timeless Story Reborn: Adapted from Abbé Prévost’s novel Manon Lescaut, Manon remains a testament to Kenneth MacMillan’s genius. His deep understanding of human psychology and masterful narrative choreography are vividly displayed in the intense duets of the leading couple, portraying a compelling tale of desire and desperation.
- Sensory Splendour: The ballet’s visual and auditory elements are a feast for the senses. Nicholas Georgiadis’s designs set the stage for a rich, historical backdrop, complemented by Jules Massenet’s emotive score and Jacopo Pantani’s ingenious lighting design. This combination creates an immersive experience that transports audiences to another era.
- Celebrating Dance Legends: The original premiere, which received a standing ovation, featured Antoinette Sibley and Anthony Dowell in the lead roles. This 50th-anniversary revival introduces a new generation of dancers to these iconic roles. Notable debuts include Yasmine Naghdi and Fumi Kaneko as Manon, and Marcelino Sambé, William Bracewell, and Calvin Richardson as Lescaut.
- A Global Spectacle: Beyond its stage run, the ballet reaches a worldwide audience through a live cinema broadcast on Wednesday 7 February. This performance will star Natalia Osipova and Reece Clarke in the lead roles. Subsequent encore screenings will begin from Sunday 11 February, ensuring that the magic of Manon can be experienced globally.
- An Ongoing Legacy: As one of the most dramatic and heartbreaking ballets in the repertory, Manon continues to be a staple in ballet companies around the world. This 50th-anniversary production not only celebrates its rich history but also paves the way for its continued reverence in the world of dance.
