Choral music fans, this one’s for you. The Carice Singers are launching their new album of Sir Michael Tippett’s unaccompanied choral music with a concert at Kings Place, joined by acclaimed countertenor Hugh Cutting. Here are five reasons to go.
1. Rediscover a visionary composer
Tippett created some of the most beautiful, daring and transcendental soundscapes of the 20th century. He wrote only a handful of unaccompanied choral works, but they are remarkable for their originality and virtuosity. This concert is a rare chance to hear them performed together.
2. Music from wartime London
The first half recreates the kind of invigorating programmes Tippett conducted with the choir at Morley College during the darkest days of the Second World War, mixing Byrd, Gibbons, Purcell and Hindemith with his own pieces such as The Windhover and Plebs Angelica.
3. Hugh Cutting’s haunting lullaby
Countertenor Hugh Cutting joins the group for Tippett’s hauntingly beautiful Lullaby for Six Voices, originally written for the great Alfred Deller in the late 1950s, at a time when Tippett’s style was changing dramatically.
4. A world premiere
The second half includes the world premiere of a new piece by composer Alex Groves, inspired by Tippett’s friendships with the sculptor Barbara Hepworth and the composer Priaulx Rainier, showing how Tippett still inspires composers today.
5. An album launch night
The Carice Singers, conducted by George Parris, are Royal Philharmonic Society Award nominees, and their new Tippett recording is released on Signum Records the same day. Kings Place’s Hall One has wonderful acoustics, making it a perfect setting for unaccompanied voices.
