5 Highlights of Dominic Cooke’s First Almeida Season, Including David Tennant in The Entertainer

London Theatre | January 2027 – early 2028

The Almeida Theatre in Islington has announced Dominic Cooke‘s first season as Artistic Director, with four world premieres, ambitious revivals and a starry return for David Tennant. Here are five highlights.

1. A new Caryl Churchill premiere (14 January – 13 March)

The season opens with Three and a Bit, a collection of biting short plays by Caryl Churchill, often called Britain’s most influential playwright, directed by her longtime collaborator James Macdonald. It follows her sold-out Triumph.

2. The Inequalities trilogy (22 March – 22 May)

For the first time, Alexander Zeldin’s acclaimed Beyond Caring, LOVE and Faith, Hope and Charity will be performed together. On selected dates you can watch all three in one day for an epic theatrical event.

3. David Tennant in The Entertainer (early 2028)

In his first Almeida production, David Tennant plays faded music hall showman Archie Rice in John Osborne’s classic, directed by Cooke. It’s one to watch for when booking opens in 2027.

4. An audience-decided political thriller (August – September)

Olivier winner Chris Bush’s The Right Woman follows the race to become Labour’s first female Prime Minister. There are three candidates and three possible endings, and at the interval the audience decides.

5. Plus Musculus, The Island and The Winslow Boy

Cooke directs Jamie Bogyo’s darkly comic world premiere Musculus (June – July), new Associate Director Ola Ince directs the anti-apartheid classic The Island (October – November), and Sacha Wares reimagines Rattigan’s The Winslow Boy with a band of young musicians (December 2027).
