London Theatre | Now playing until Saturday 17 October 2026
The Girl in the Mask is a new dark comedy by award-winning writer Brad Sutherland, now playing at the White Bear Theatre in Kennington. Here are five reasons to catch it before it closes.
1. A family divided by grief
After her father’s death, 19-year-old Amy has started wearing a mask. It’s time for the world, and especially her mother Celia, to see that she’s different. When Celia refuses to acknowledge there’s a problem, mother and daughter resort to extreme tactics to get what they want from each other.
2. An honest look at autistic shutdown
The play is based on the playwright’s own experience of autism in his close family. It explores masking, autistic shutdown and the growing trend of young adults going no contact with their parents, subjects rarely seen on stage.
3. Funny as well as moving
Despite its serious themes, it’s a dark comedy about a family emerging from grief and discovering that their loved ones aren’t who they need them to be. Expect laughs alongside the heartache.
4. Made with the cast over two years
The production is the result of a two-year collaboration between the cast and Sutherland, whose previous White Bear play, Until She Sleeps, was called beautiful and gut-wrenching by London Theatre Reviews.
5. Great-value fringe tickets
Tickets are just £14 to £16 including booking fee, and the White Bear is one of south London’s best pub theatres. It’s suitable for ages 12+.
