Dublin-born singer-songwriter Sorcha Richardson has released her third album, Draw The Outline, on Faction Records. This November she brings it to life with her full band, including a London show at the beautiful Hoxton Hall on 10 November.
Here are five reasons to go.
1. An album made by the sea
After nearly a decade in New York and a period of burnout, Sorcha moved to West Kerry, at the foot of a mountain and a short walk from the sea. She made almost every big decision about the album while walking along Ventry beach, and the songs carry that slower, calmer pace.
2. A warm new sound
Moving away from the synths of her earlier records, Draw The Outline uses woodwinds, saxophone, Hammond organ and piano, with acoustic guitar at its heart. Produced by Chris W Ryan, it draws on artists like Feist and Aldous Harding. Friends including James Vincent McMorrow and SOAK helped along the way.
3. Songs you’ll want to hear live
Start with the singles “Grenadine”, “Illinois Again”, “Ellen Forever” and “Adam (Pacing In The Park)”. They’re gentle, thoughtful and quietly heart-wrenching, the kind of songs that really come alive in a small room.
4. A rising star
Sorcha’s debut was nominated for Ireland’s Choice Music Prize, and her second album Smiling Like An Idiot topped the Irish Independent Albums Chart. She has more than 80 million streams, has headlined the Barbican, and has supported Mitski, Snow Patrol and Villagers.
5. A special London venue
Hoxton Hall is a restored Victorian music hall in east London, with an intimate, galleried auditorium. It’s the perfect setting for an album inspired partly by the magic of small, close-up performances.
