Dreaming of Hawaii? OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Beach Resort has unveiled its newly redesigned guestrooms, and they’re available to book now. They’re the first stage of a $100 million transformation of OUTRIGGER’s original flagship hotel, right on the beach where modern surf culture was born.
Here are five things to know.
1. Inspired by the beach outside
Every material and motif draws on the land, water and history of Waikīkī. Soft sun-washed woods and pastels echo the surf, sky and sunset, and even the rugs carry the pattern a retreating wave leaves in the sand.
2. Woven walls and ocean views
Woven-basket screens replace solid walls, filling the rooms with natural light and drawing your eye straight to the ocean. The design nods to the ʻĀpuakēhau Stream, whose name means “basket of dew”, and graphic rivulets inspired by the stream wind along the corridors.
3. A mural by a native Hawaiian artist
Each room features a custom mural of Queen Emma’s lily garden by native Hawaiian artist Kamea Hadar. It’s a tribute to the Hawaiian royal who once owned and tended this land. In the corridors, the room numbers are paired with surf photography by Zak Noyle.
4. Nearly 60 years on the beach
OUTRIGGER has been welcoming guests to this beach for almost 60 years, and the resort says returning guests describe it as coming home. The rooms are new, but the team wants that feeling to stay the same.
5. Be among the first to stay
The rooms were designed by PowerStrip Studio with WCIT Architecture and DTL, a Hawaiian strategy studio. Guests booking now will be among the first to try them and see the rest of the resort’s transformation as it unfolds. OUTRIGGER is part of the Global Hotel Alliance, so members of its DISCOVERY loyalty programme can earn rewards.
