Fresh from a hugely successful Edinburgh Fringe run, American clown and theatre-maker Zoe Wohlfeld is bringing DOG FUNERAL to Soho Theatre for three nights from 10–12 September 2026. Strange, funny and unexpectedly moving, the show turns pet grief into something gloriously theatrical.
1. It starts with a funeral for a dog
The premise is wonderfully simple and completely ridiculous.
Zoe Wohlfeld is holding a funeral for her childhood dog, dressed in Victorian mourning clothes and determined to grieve properly. There are tears, emotional breakdowns, audience interaction and even a water pistol to help the crying along.
From there, DOG FUNERAL becomes an increasingly chaotic look at what grief can do to people.
2. It was a hit at the Edinburgh Fringe
DOG FUNERAL arrives in London with plenty of momentum behind it.
The show received a string of four and five-star reviews during its Edinburgh Fringe run, while Wohlfeld was nominated for the Comedians’ Choice Award.
Her funeral for Greyfriars Bobby also became one of the Fringe’s more unusual viral moments and helped earn her a nomination for the Malcolm Hardee Awards.
The Financial Times even picked it out as one of the most quintessentially Fringe experiences of the festival.
3. It is about more than losing a pet
Despite the title, this is not simply a comedy about dogs.
DOG FUNERAL explores grief, forgiveness, selfishness and the strange ways people behave when life suddenly becomes overwhelming.
Wohlfeld has spoken openly about drawing on her own experiences of bereavement, including the feeling that grief can make you difficult, unreasonable and desperate for sympathy.
The result is dark comedy with something genuine underneath it.
4. Zoe Wohlfeld is a serious clown
Wohlfeld trained at École Philippe Gaulier in France before moving to London and creating original comedy and theatre work.
She has previously performed at Soho Theatre, London Clown Festival, Brighton Fringe and Edinburgh Fringe, including with the live-directed clown show A Night of Drama.
DOG FUNERAL is her debut solo show, co-written and directed by Jack Grossman, with original music by Laila Woozeer.
Expect physical comedy, improvisation, awkwardness and plenty of interaction with the audience.
5. The London run is very short
There are just three nights to catch DOG FUNERAL at Soho Theatre.
