Woody Sez London 2026: 5 Things to Know About the Woody Guthrie Musical at Underbelly Boulevard Soho

Woody Sez: The Life & Music of Woody Guthrie comes to Underbelly Boulevard in Soho from 8–19 September 2026, bringing the songs and story of one of America’s most influential folk musicians back to London.

1. It tells Woody Guthrie’s remarkable life story

Rather than a conventional jukebox musical, Woody Sez uses Guthrie’s own songs, letters, diary entries and writings to explore his life. The story travels through the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, wartime service and his later years in New York.

2. More than 20 instruments are played live

The show is performed by four actor-musicians: David M. Lutken, David Finch, Nyssa Grant and Raquel Chavez. Between them they play more than 20 instruments, with music and storytelling flowing together like an intimate folk session.

3. It has travelled around the world

Woody Sez first appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2007 and has since had more than 80 productions around the world. It has previously played London’s Arts Theatre as well as Off-Broadway in New York.

4. David M. Lutken returns as Woody Guthrie

Broadway performer David M. Lutken devised the show and once again takes the role of Guthrie. He has won both the Helen Hayes Award and Joseph Jefferson Award for his portrayal and has performed the production internationally.
