Sir Ian McKellen has backed a new project supporting LGBT+ people facing persecution in Uganda. The initiative, funded through supporters of the Peter Tatchell Foundation, will provide safe housing, food, farming opportunities and skills training.
1. More Than £14,000 Has Been Raised
Supporters of the Peter Tatchell Foundation donated £14,645 towards the project, which is being developed with Out & Proud African LGBTI (OPAL).
2. Ian McKellen Has Supported the Campaign
Sir Ian McKellen helped fund the project and joined Peter Tatchell and representatives from OPAL for the presentation of the funding in London. McKellen described the initiative as an important lifeline for LGBT+ Ugandans facing persecution.
3. The Project Will Provide Safe Housing
Known as the Dauglas Project, the scheme aims to create secure accommodation for LGBT+ people experiencing homelessness, poverty and social exclusion.
4. Farming, Music and Skills Training Are Included
The project will include farmland for growing food and potentially generating income. Plans also include music, dance, sport and a small recording facility designed to help participants develop skills and employment opportunities.
5. Around 30 to 80 People Could Be Supported
Organisers hope the project will support approximately 30 to 80 LGBT+ people during its first year. Its exact location will remain confidential because of safety concerns.
