A powerful new opportunity for physical activity has launched in Central London, encouraging people living with Parkinson’s in Charing Cross and surrounding areas to join a free, non-contact boxing class aimed at helping them live well with the condition.
The popular local class, known as Parky Blinders, is delivered by experienced instructors from Parky Power, an organization dedicated to supporting people with Parkinson’s through a range of physical activity classes, sports, and social opportunities. The initiative is proudly supported by both England Boxing and Parkinson’s UK.Why Boxing? The Non-Contact Advantage
Non-contact boxing is a highly accessible form of the sport where participants use punch bags and pads to practice technique—with no physical contact allowed. The new sessions offer a controlled and relaxed environment with experienced coaches to ensure participants get the most out of every workout.
For people with Parkinson’s, the benefits are significant and wide-ranging:
- Physical Health: Supports better coordination, balance, and strength, and is proven to reduce the risk of falls.
- Cognitive Function: Can help improve memory and overall cognitive skills.
- Wellbeing: Improves an overall sense of wellbeing and mindfulness, alongside greater flexibility and mobility.
- Social Connection: Serves as an important social activity, fostering greater social interaction and improving speech and communications skills.
Beate Vogt, Activity Coordinator at Power Up Parkies, highlights the social benefits: At Parky Blinders we have fun while working out, have a great playlist to box to and often go for a drink and a chat afterwards. I would definitely recommend the sessions to anyone who wants to give something new a go, you would definitely enjoy it.Class Details
