Voila! Theatre Festival 2025 continues to celebrate multilingual and boundary-breaking theatre with a fearless new performance that’s already captivated audiences across Latin America. Award-winning Mexican actress and playwright Caridad Gómez brings her one-woman show #FATKARY: The Corrido of a Tragic Ex-Fat Woman to The Playground Theatre, London, on 14 November (7 pm) and 15 November (8:30 pm).
1. A Fearless One-Woman Show About Body Image and Belonging
Written and performed by Gómez and directed by Alberto Ontiveros, #FATKARY dives into what it means to live in a body that defies expectation. Mixing humour, music, food and audience interaction, the piece explores body image, shame and identity through a blend of empathy and dark comedy.
2. A Border Ballad of Survival and Laughter
Described by Gómez as a “corrido” – a border ballad of resilience and joy – #FATKARY combines theatre, cabaret, dance and rap. The show becomes a playful catalogue of tragedies and absurdities, where humour becomes a tool for survival in a world that often judges those who don’t fit in.
3. An Internationally Acclaimed Performance
Following performances in Texas, Mexico City, Nuevo León, Baja California and Tamaulipas, the show earned Gómez the Best Actress Award at the XLI Mtro. Rafael Solana Theatre Contest (2024). Its London dates mark the UK premiere of this funny, unflinching and deeply personal work.
4. Part of the Voila! Theatre Festival 2025
The production is part of the Voila! Theatre Festival 2025, a three-week celebration of multilingual and cross-cultural performance running from 3 to 23 November. With 110 events in 70 languages across eight London venues, the festival connects artists and audiences from around the world through border-busting theatre.
