The Sondheim Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue hosted one of the most important showcases for emerging musical theatre talent in the UK—the Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year competition. With over 330 initial applicants, narrowed down to 12 exceptional finalists, the 2025 event was a true celebration of skill, storytelling, and Sondheim’s enduring legacy.

1. Georgia Blessitt Wins SSSSPOTY 2025
Georgia Blessitt, representing the Royal Academy of Music, was named the winner of this year’s competition. Georgia delivered a poised and emotionally resonant performance that left both judges and the audience deeply moved. In addition to the £1,000 cash prize, she will now headline her own Sondheim-inspired cabaret in London—an invaluable opportunity to launch a professional career in musical theatre.
Blessitt’s win adds to the Royal Academy of Music’s distinguished track record at SSSSPOTY, matching ArtsEd’s total with three past winners each.
2. Rigby Edwards Awarded Runner-Up
Rigby Edwards, from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, took the runner-up position. Edwards impressed the judging panel with a sophisticated and engaging performance, demonstrating vocal finesse and clear dramatic understanding. The runner-up prize includes £500 and wide recognition within the UK theatre community.
Each finalist performed a classic Sondheim song alongside a new musical theatre number from the New UK Musicals collection, highlighting their versatility as performers.
3. An Esteemed Panel of Judges and a West End Host
This year’s competition featured a panel of respected figures from the British theatre scene. Jenna Russell acted as Chair of Judges, supported by Clare Foster, Darren Clark, and Catherine Jayes. Hosting the afternoon was acclaimed performer Rosalie Craig, best known for her Olivier-nominated performance in Company.
The event was directed by Hannah Chissick and featured music direction by Nigel Lilley, ensuring high artistic standards throughout.
4. A Showcase of New Writing Alongside Sondheim Classics
In line with Stephen Sondheim’s personal wish, the competition pairs one of his own songs with a new work by a contemporary British composer. The 2025 final included a special debut of a previously unheard number by Cinco Paul (creator of Schmigadoon!), originally written for Ariana DeBose and Dove Cameron.
This emphasis on new writing ensures that the competition remains not only a tribute to Sondheim’s legacy but also a platform for the future of musical theatre composition in the UK.
5. A Proven Launchpad for Careers in Theatre
Now in its 17th year, SSSSPOTY has consistently identified performers who go on to star in the West End and beyond. Alumni include Taron Egerton, Cynthia Erivo, Erin Doherty, and Alex Young.
Many previous finalists have gone on to work with companies such as the National Theatre, Donmar Warehouse, and major television platforms. With its professional panel, live West End stage, and emphasis on both tradition and innovation, SSSSPOTY remains one of the most significant events in UK theatre education.
