Three-part series from BBC Studios – Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution

Nona Hendryx, Ana Matronic, Jake Shears, Honey Dijon, Jessie Ware, DJ/Producer David Morales, and Legendary Studio 54 DJ Nicky Siano , join Disco Legends to celebrate a revolution.

Series to air Saturday 16th December 2023 (first two episodes) and Saturday 23rd December 2023 on BBC 2  (Final  Episode) and on iPlayer  – Series to also air in the U.S. on PBS in 2024

  1. Celebration of Disco’s Musical Roots and Evolution: The documentary promises to be a rich exploration of disco music, showcasing iconic disco tracks and remarkable archive footage. It aims to analyze and appreciate the anthemic songs and distinct sound that defined the era, celebrating the genre’s musical excellence and its lasting influence on the world of music.
  2. Focus on the Pioneers of Disco: The series intends to bring together the overlooked pioneers of disco to narrate a revisionist history of the disco age. By featuring the original creators of the genre, including young black women who became divas, black and Latino men who turned into superstar DJs, and openly gay men who became influential producers, the documentary seeks to pay homage to the true innovators of disco.
  3. Addressing Social and Cultural Impact: The documentary will not only focus on the music but also delve into the significant social and cultural impact of disco. It will explore how the genre played a role in movements related to Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ+ identity, and female empowerment, highlighting disco’s contribution beyond the dance floor.

Narrative of Resilience and Evolution: While touching upon the brief but intense popularity of disco and its subsequent mainstream co-optation and backlash, the series also aims to tell a story of resilience.
