In this Q&A, Catherine shares her excitement for the role, her connection to the character, and the unique aspects of this award-winning musical.
Q: Catherine, what does it mean to you to play Blanche Barrow in “Bonnie & Clyde The Musical”?
A: It’s absolutely a dream come true for me. This role marks my professional debut in musical theatre, and I couldn’t be more excited.
Q: Why did you choose this particular musical?
A: I’ve been approached for musicals before, but I needed to really love the project to commit. When I heard Blanche’s big number, “That’s What You Call A Dream,” I was hooked instantly. It just felt right.
Q: Can you tell us about your character, Blanche Barrow?
A: Blanche is such a powerhouse character. She’s deeply in love with her husband Buck, Clyde’s elder brother, and becomes a reluctant part of the Barrow Gang. Her strength and devotion really stand out.
Q: Have you done stage work before this?
A: Yes, I’ve been involved in theatre, including work on Jim Cartwright’s “Is There Anybody There?” and my own project, “The Ceremony.” But “Bonnie & Clyde” is my first professional musical.
Q: How do you relate to Blanche as a character?
A: I see a lot of myself in her determination and inner strength. Although I don’t practise my Catholic faith anymore, my upbringing and my mother’s devoutness inspire my portrayal of Blanche’s character.
Q: What’s unique about “Bonnie & Clyde The Musical”?
A: The show has it all – great music, a thrilling adventure, and a deep dive into some intense love stories, like between Bonnie and Clyde, and Blanche and Buck. It’s exhilarating and emotional, with a good dose of comedy too.
