5 things to do today at Harvey Nichols OXO Tower Restaurant

There can’t be many fine dining places in Britain with a view such as the OXO tower restaurant.

The views of the River Thames are impressive and provide a totally immersive experience watching boats pass by and helicopters fly past.

People feel the need to dress up and rightly so.

One

Start with a gin and tonic and Harvey Nichols mineral water. There is a large selection of gin to choose from so try a couple. Of course you could have a cocktail if you prefer from the extensive list.  All this with perfect views of the Thames. Next you will be offered bread.  (a choice given) – I went for Rosemary and potato – delightful. It was also good to see a large lemon wedge in the gin and tonic

Two

Choose the seared peppered beef for your starter. This is served with roasted asparagus and a rich sweetcorn puree. The steak is served quite rare and the aftertaste of pepper compliments brilliantly a slug of your chosen wine. I went simple and opted for the house red which was excellent quality.

Three

Choose a main course of Dingley Dell pork fillets.  This is a generous portion of pork cooked superbly and very tender. The pork is served with pea purée and baby turnips. Take your time and enjoy every mouthful. It’s worth sitting back and enjoying the magnificent views of London.  I ordered a bowl of Jersey Royal potatoes which came proud all by themselves in a bowl. Subtlety salted and well buttered they were beautiful. I few crumbs of soil left on the skin gave the impression of just having been picked.

Four

Next for dessert. I went for the OXO chocolate plate. Four individual desserts arrived. Each couldn’t be more different. From cold to warm, from dark to white and from crunchy to soft. Hints of hazelnut and lemon.

Five

Enjoy the sunset over coffee. The terrace mood is ever changing. As I write the sun is gradually lowering – stunning and beautiful. Sitting on the terrace in the summer must be the best place to sit. You even get a colourfully decorated coffee cup. The coffee is served with hot milk without asking. Also petit four accompany including one called ‘melting moment’.

5 Particular Highlights

  1. Crisp white linen – this is what you notice as you first walk into the restaurant.
  2. Impeccable service with attention to detail. Table crumbs are scraped away with precision after every course.
  3. High quality food with the starter and dessert being a particular highlight for me.
  4. Unparalleled views of London. You will never get bored of the ever changing scene.
  5. Brilliant location – only a ten minute walk from London Waterloo mainline station.

The OXO Tower restaurant is a high quality fine dining experience that you won’t forget. As London takes advantage more and more of its high spaces we should always remember some of the original and best.
